M BURTON Wine Range

M BURTON represents the most personal and limited expressions of Matt Burton’s winemaking. These are rare, small-volume wines shaped by experience, intuition and a desire to explore complexity beyond the normal boundaries of vintage, variety and style.

While Gundog Estate is grounded in regional classics, and Indomitus offers a space for artistically driven innovation, M BURTON sits in a more singular place. It is not a range built around commercial breadth or regular release patterns. It is a personal marque: a collection of wines made only when the idea, the material and the opportunity align.

The guiding question behind M BURTON is deceptively simple: what else might be possible? Not in the sense of novelty or excess, but in the pursuit of greater depth, texture, harmony and longevity. The wines often begin with familiar varieties — particularly Riesling and Shiraz — but they are approached through less conventional frameworks. Multi-vintage blending, extended maturation, unusual textural decisions and a heightened focus on structural architecture all form part of the conversation.

M BURTON Shiraz

The non-vintage M BURTON Shiraz project, for example, reflects an interest in complexity that cannot always be achieved within the neat boundaries of a single vintage release. In Australian wine, vintage is often treated as a fixed rule: one season, one wine, one expression. But great complexity can also emerge through layering. Different years can bring different qualities — freshness, perfume, depth, savoury development, tannin maturity, fruit vibrancy — and when carefully assembled, they can create a wine that feels both complete and alive.

This approach requires patience and judgement. It asks us to think less like technicians following a standard release calendar and more like composers working with recurring themes. Each component brings its own tone and texture. The final wine must not feel like a collection of parts; it must resolve into something coherent, graceful and compelling.

The NV M BURTON Riesling extends this same spirit into white wine. Riesling is often celebrated for purity, precision and linearity, particularly in the cool-climate vineyards of the Canberra District. M BURTON does not reject these virtues, but seeks to build upon them. The aim is to explore the variety’s capacity for texture, tension and detail — to preserve its essential brightness while allowing room for greater complexity and shape.

The wines are made in tiny quantities and are deliberately positioned at the apex of our portfolio. They are not designed for every occasion, nor necessarily for every palate. They are wines for collectors, curious drinkers and those who enjoy seeing a winemaker pursue an idea with conviction. They reward attention. They invite contemplation. They are as much about form and feeling as they are about flavour.

At the same time, M BURTON remains connected to the values that underpin all our wines. The fruit must be excellent, the wine must be balanced, and the structure must support the idea. Creativity is only meaningful if it results in a more profound and pleasurable drinking experience.

There is also a deeply personal dimension to the range. After more than two decades in wine, certain questions become more interesting. How does experience change the way we interpret fruit? How can a wine hold both maturity and vitality? What happens when intuition, accumulated knowledge and technical discipline are allowed to guide a wine outside the usual categories?

M BURTON is an ongoing series of answers to those questions. Each release is a statement of intent, but also an exploration. The wines are rare because they must earn their place. They are rare and ambitious because they seek something beyond simple varietal correctness. And they are personal because they carry the full weight of a winemaker’s accumulated experience, curiosity and belief.

M BURTON is the most contemplative expression of Gundog Estate: limited, layered, carefully resolved and made for those who find beauty in complexity.
